If planet Earth were any closer to the Sun, it would've been too hot. Any farther ... too cold. It is the perfect distance from the Sun, and it offers everything we need. The human's biological needs and nature are beautifully aligned. The peak of citrus season is late Fall, all of winter, and early Spring - when colds and flus are in the air, and our immune systems require a nice Vitamin C boost. All four seasons have nutritional offerings that assist our bodies through the changing seasons.

Spring = Detoxification + Renewal.

Radishes, spinach, arugula, and asparagus are usually the first to arrive for Spring. They provide chlorophyll, iron, and calcium, all of which help to cleanse the digestive tract. They also help stimulate liver function. We can also expect high-antioxidant berries, as well as strawberries. This offers us Vitamin C for the changing Spring weather.

Summer = Hydration.

Summer offers us hydrating foods as well as skin-protecting nutrients that protect from the sun. Its harvest counteracts heat by focusing on water content. Cucumbers, watermelons, and cantaloupe are all more than 90% water - a natural way to beat dehydration offered by beautiful Earth. We can get plenty of antioxidants from berries, tomatoes, and peppers. These carotenoids and lycopene are compounds that act as an internal sunscreen (still wear sunscreen. Lol), protecting skin cells from UV damage and heat stress.

Autumn/Fall = Grounding. Immune Prep.

In the Fall, nature offers us hearty foods. We need that lasting energy. Apples and pears support gut health, and root vegetables like squash, carrots, and sweet potatoes are rich in complex carbohydrates and beta-carotene.

Winter = Immune Defense.

Earth provides fruits that are high in defense for this season. Lemons, oranges, and grapefruits all offer heavy doses of Vitamin C to reduce cold symptoms. Onions, kale, garlic, and potatoes flourish well. Garlic and onion have incredible benefits year-round, and they are especially beneficial in the Winter season. They provide natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

Connecting With the Planet.

I have been enjoying my journey of connecting with this beautiful planet. It feels freeing. As my family has started our garden, I am learning so much more about nature and plants. Some plants require more time than others; some need more sun or a little more shade. Some may need to be watered a lot more often than others. They tell us what they need. One of our plants was leaning over heavily, its limbs so fragile. What I discovered was that it needed more sun, so it leaned toward it. That was so fascinating to learn. It was leaning toward what it needed. They need patience. One plant seemed done. After watering and moving it around a little, trying to find the perfect spot, one day we saw that it had started to blossom beautifully. I couldn't believe it.

While I'm deepening the green in my thumb, I wanted to start small. I keep a notebook specifically for our garden, and I take notes. I'm learning plant by plant. I used to feel that I had to study garden books before I began, but the truth is, that was delaying the process. Sometimes, the best way to learn is to get started. Every mistake becomes a lesson learned.

The Rooted Garden.

I named my family's garden, The Rooted Garden. I wanted to come up with a name we all love. We all love The Rooted Garden.

Sweet potatoes, collards, basil, thyme, garlic chives, oregano, marigolds, and green onions. We also have bell peppers, banana peppers, and jalapeños, but I've learned that because this is not the ideal season to grow them, we'll soon have to transfer them to the garage until spring, when the temperature begins to drop. We will be starting broccoli and cauliflower indoors before transferring them outdoors, and directly sowing lettuce, radish, carrots, peas, and more herbs outdoors for September. We will be adding fruits soon also. I look forward to eating what we've grown. I also want to grow herbs. There's not a shop near that has a huge selection. I found one online that I couldn't wait to visit the very next day. It is now my favorite tea shop. My hubby drives me over an hour to take me. We always enjoy visiting the shop, but I have decided to grow our favorite herbs for tea starting this year.

Take a look at our growing apothecary.

These are my favorite tea bags. The bags in the middle are my favorite to use when I'm giving tea as gifts.

Zucchini Plant.
We have to try again with zucchini next season. I took notes on what may have caused it to wither.

Jewel For Today.

The planet offers everything we need.

Keep your light!
